The Life Cycle Assessment seminar “Ökobilanzwerkstatt” is an event for young researchers in the field of life cycle analysis and offers a forum for scientific discussion, networking and exchange of experience. From September 22nd to 24th, Wood K plus organized an excellent seminar program with 22 scientific presentations and two keynote lectures in eight thematic sessions.

Ökobilanzwerkstatt went virtual

Due to the difficult predictability caused by the current pandemic, the seminar was held virtually. Despite these circumstances, about 30 international phD students contributed to a lively and interesting discussion thanks to the exciting contributions. Under this year’s motto “Resources in a circular economy with a focus on land use”, the Life Cycle Assessment seminar offered eight thematic sessions. Three of which were dedicated to IEA Bioenergy Task 42 Topics: Biorefinery, energy and material use of biobased waste flows and LCA of emerging technologies

IEA Bioenergy Task 42 – Biorefining

With great commitment, Johannes Lindorfer from the Energy Institute of the Johannes Kepler University in Linz presented potentials of a sustainable circular economy through the establishment of biorefinery concepts. Thanks to his many years of expertise in ecological, economic and socio-technical sustainability assessment, he was able to impressively demonstrate the challenges but also the advantages of an ex-ante Life Cycle Assessment: By assessing sustainability in the early stages of a technology, the levers in the sense of a sustainable circular economy can already be identified in the development phase. He also gave some innsights into the networking activities of the IEA Bioenergy Task 42 to strengthen international cooperation in biorefinery research and technology development which was highly appreciated by the participants.

The success of the Life Cycle Assessment seminar “Ökobilanzwerkstatt” is also reflected in the fact that this format has been held annually since 2005, as founder Professor Liselotte Schebek from TU Darmstadt highlighted in her welcome address. It is famous for being a place to knit bonds and make friends which is especially valuable for the careers of the young Life Cycle Assessment researchers.
