Innovative bio-based products for a sustainable future: A Cepi study on Pulp and Paper Industry biorefineries in Europe
The European pulp and paper industry is fully committed to a climate-neutral Europe as stated in the 2030 Industry Manifesto. The path towards this objective requires creating more added-value while decarbonising the industrial processes. This ambition was already fully expressed in the Cepi 2050 Roadmap, which also looked at potential ways in which the European pulp and paper industry can deliver more in the most sustainable way.
The new Cepi study identifies the capacity of pulp and paper biorefineries to deliver new sustainable bio-based products. Going beyond the well-known bio-based products of the pulp and paper industry such as paper packaging, bio-refineries use wood fibres and pulp as their raw materials to produce solvents, polymers, paints, coatings, inks, surfactants, cosmetics, adhesives, lubricants, plasticisers, stabilisers, enzymes and agrochemicals. These new applications are namely used for building, food, feed, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries.
The growth of sustainable bio-based options based upon renewable materials can only contribute to the broader goal of carbon-free economy by 2050.
Our webinar will explore the state-of-the-art of biorefineries today as well as different scenarios for their growth, illustrating the innovation coming from the pulp and paper industry. We also wish to start a discussion on the role of bioeconomy in the implementation of the EU Green Deal objectives
